A seventh-grade student in Michigan is being hailed as a hero for his quick thinking and courageous actions that prevented a school bus from crashing. According to school officials, Dillon Reeves, a student at Lois E. Carter Middle School in Warren, saved the day after the bus driver lost consciousness while driving the bus.
On Wednesday afternoon, the bus driver alerted the transportation department that she was feeling unwell and planned to pull over to wait for relief. However, before she could reach her intended destination, she passed out, causing the bus to veer into oncoming traffic.
Reeves, who was seated about five rows back, sprang into action. He ran to the front of the bus, took control of the steering wheel, and brought the bus to a stop in the middle of the road. Despite the panic on the bus, Reeves managed to slow the bus down gradually, likely in anticipation that the bus was full of passengers.
In a video released by Warren Consolidated Schools, Reeves can be seen taking control of the steering wheel, slowly pushing the brakes, and then yelling to the other passengers to call 911. “Someone call 911. Now. Someone should call 911. I don’t care! Someone call 911!” he shouted.
The Warren police and fire departments responded to the scene within minutes and treated the bus driver, who is now stable but under observation at a hospital. Fortunately, none of the children on the bus were injured.
Dillon Reeves’ parents, Steve and Ireta Reeves, praised their son for his bravery and quick thinking. “First off, we are very, very proud. I mean, this is overwhelming for all of us,” said Steve Reeves.
Dillon’s heroic actions have earned him the admiration of his school district and community. “Dillon acted in an extraordinary act of courage and maturity, and in doing so, saved many lives,” said Warren Consolidated Schools Superintendent Robert D. Livernois.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and the need for quick thinking during emergencies. Dillon Reeves’ bravery has proven that heroes come in all ages and that they can be found in unexpected places.
