In a heartwarming incident, Sterling Heights Police went above and beyond the call of duty during a routine traffic stop. Officer Kevin Coates pulled over a speeding Buick near 18 1/2 mile on Thursday, Sept. 30 2021, around 7:30 p.m. What he discovered was not a typical traffic violation.

The 79-year-old driver, identified only as David, was visibly distressed and tearful. He explained to Officer Coates that his day had taken a turn for the worse. A long-time Sterling Heights resident, David shared that his wife was unwell, and they had an adult son with special needs.

The source of his current predicament? A new TV he had bought to bring joy to his family. Overwhelmed and frustrated, David had been racing around town trying to find the right cables to set up the television.

Upon learning of David’s dilemma, Officer Coates extended a helping hand. Despite having a police call to attend to, he promised to swing by later with his colleagues to assist. True to their word, Officer Coates, Officer Remi Verougstraete, and new recruit Officer Jeremy Jakushevich arrived at David’s home an hour later.

Together, the officers not only resolved David’s TV connection issues but also provided guidance on navigating channels. David, who admitted to struggling with technology, expressed gratitude, stating that he wouldn’t have been able to set up the TV without their assistance.

Sterling Heights Police Chief Dale Dwojakowski commended the officers for their exceptional service, emphasizing their dedication to going above and beyond to help residents. Despite receiving a verbal warning for speeding, David’s day took a positive turn thanks to the kindness and assistance of the Sterling Heights Police Department.
